The client, a successful Sydney artist, wanted a fresh, more contemporary interpretation of a traditional tessellated verandah for her Italianate style cottage in Sydney's Inner West. Her existing pavement was in need of major refurbishment, but she wasn't sure which pattern would be suitable. Inspiration was found in a most unlikely place.
On visiting the site, our consultant spotted an antique garden bench with a panel of original Victorian tiles inlaid in the seat. He suggested that they replicate this design for the entire verandah - a modified Melbourne pattern featuring the Winckelmans colour Wisteria. Not only did the idea greatly appeal to the client, as it maintained a tangible link with the house's past, she was thrilled with the result. It just goes to prove that inspiration can come from anywhere, no matter how humble
